Teen Drivers

You can start to learn to drive and get your license at a very early age. But this comes with a lot of responsibility. Teenage drivers are new to the roadway. If you have someone in your household who is nearing the age to drive, it is a great idea to talk to them while in the car. Teach them the importance of driving safely, paying attention, and not getting distracted.

Teenage Fatalities

According to the cdc (https://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/teen_drivers/teendrivers_factsheet.html) the second leading death in teenagers is motor vehicle fatalities. In many cases, this can be prevented by teaching your teenagers to always wear a seat belt and to pay attention while driving.

How to Prevent Risk

Ways you can minimize the risk of a driving fatality are:

  • Do not drink and drive
  • Limit the number of passengers
  • New Drivers – Limit  driving for the first few months
  • Distractions – Teach teens to put the cell phone up

Drinking and Driving

How Does Alcohol Affect Driving

Drinking impairs much of your motor and cognitive reasoning. It impairs your thinking, reaction time, muscle coordination, and reasoning. It is illegal to drive in all 50 states if your BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) is .08 or higher.

Risks of Driving After Drinking

In 2016, over 10,000 people died in alcohol-related accidents. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration- https://www.nhtsa.gov). You are seven times more likely to be in an accident if your BAC is .08 or higher. The good thing is that has significantly decreased over the years. But one death from drinking and driving can still be avoided. Not only are you putting yourself at risk when you drink and drive but you are putting others at risk as well.
